Exercise With Limitations: Finding Your Starting Point in Algonquin
I see you. You want to move more, feel strong again, and take better care of your body—but every time you try to work out, something hurts.
And the fear of making things worse keeps you stuck.
What if we start by finding a more manageable way to move?
Understand the pain before pushing through it
Pain is real. It can be influenced by injury, health conditions, previous experiences, stress, and the sensitivity of the nervous system.
Pain does not always tell us exactly how much tissue damage exists. But that doesn’t mean we can assume an injury has healed or that symptoms are harmless because a certain number of weeks has passed.
New, severe, unexplained, or worsening symptoms deserve assessment. After surgery or injury, follow your clinician’s guidance.
Six ways we can adjust an exercise
Find a stable starting position: use the floor, a chair, or a rail for support when appropriate.
Warm up for the movement: begin with comfortable practice repetitions.
Adjust the range: a smaller movement may be more manageable.
Change the resistance: reduce the demand when needed.
Shorten the lever: change the position of your body or the weight to alter difficulty.
Slow down: use a pace that lets you notice your response and maintain control.
Build confidence through a manageable experience
The aim isn’t to force pain away or promise a pain-free workout. It’s to find an appropriate level of activity and build capacity gradually.
If aches or limitations make exercise feel intimidating, we can discuss whether personalized coaching at our Algonquin studio is right for you.
